Floor & Wall

Picking out eco friendly flooring can be really fun because there are so many gorgeous, unique options: reclaimed wood, cork, bamboo, recycled rubber, wool carpet, etc. But, equally as important is considering what’s underneath. There’s a subfloor, which is typically pressed wood that emits toxic VOCs. Then there’s an underlayment — sound dampener under hard flooring and padding under carpet – that can contain toxic chemicals. And you also have to consider adhesives and finishes.

Standard sheetrock on your walls doesn’t pose any health issues, but there are options that are more eco-friendly – like those made from recycled materials or plant fibers, or even sheetrock which pulls toxins out of the air. Next, you have to consider joint compound and in the case of this product, you do need to consider toxic chemicals and health impacts. Finally – what goes on top? Choose from non-toxic paints and finishes, natural plasters, plant fiber wall-coverings, and more.
