One of the easiest ways to make a major statement in a kitchen or bathroom is by installing a stunning countertop that becomes the focal point of the room. But some of the most popular materials for countertops are not-so-eco-friendly and some come with a handful of health risks.
The cast iron tub was invented in the 1880s, and there are many who believe it’s still the purist’s bath. It holds heat well, lasts long, and is recyclable at the end of its use. We’ve rounded up a few of our favorite eco-friendly bathtubs that include cast iron and a host of natural materials.
Did you know bathrooms are by far the main source of water use in the home, accounting for nearly 75% of total consumption? Clearly, it’s a vital space for incorporating sustainable design. Beyond reducing water use, consider all of the other ways you can go green in the bathroom: install an energy-efficient exhaust fan, choose a reclaimed wood vanity (or adapt an old dresser), install a greywater system that waters your garden with your shower water – the list goes on and on!
The most astounding thing about copper? It’s essentially ageless. In some cases, you can scarcely tell old copper from new copper. So, while stone sinks from the 18th and 19th centuries most certainly show their age, even the oldest of copper sinks are Benjamin Button-like in appearance. And it gets better: In addition to not aging, copper actually grows better with age and the more it is used the faster it will re-patina.
EcoArtisan Builders, based in San Diego, California, renovated this 1920’s bathroom in Point Loma giving it a calm, Zen aesthetic at the homeowner’s request. What made it more eco-friendly? They repurposed and reused materials wherever possible to reduce the resources necessary to complete the project. They also opted for sustainable bamboo products when needed.
