On a Mission to do Things Better

Avocado is a mission-based brand aiming to be the most respected source for organic mattresses and pillows at affordable prices—while maintaining environmentally conscious, ethical, and sustainable business practices—to help safeguard your health and protect our planet.

In addition to creating a great product, they are a member of 1% for the Planet; Climate Neutral Certified via the Bonneville Environmental Foundation’s emissions offsets; Green America Business Certified; a US Green Building Council Member; and a Sustainable Furnishings Council Member.

Avocado mattresses are handmade in sunny California by people who are paid a fair and living wage. In addition to the high-quality construction, Avocado mattresses are a truly eco-conscious product through and through. Their packaging uses recycled content and is fully recyclable. They are the first mattress brand to achieve net-zero carbon and now are carbon negative! They offset more carbon emissions than they use in sourcing, manufacturing and delivery.

Sleep Easy on Safe Materials

All Avocado mattresses are crafted from natural and organic materials without toxic chemicals. They have through many extra steps to ensure that their materials and factory are third-party certified to meet their standards.

The Avocado Green Mattress is their #1 award-winning mattress. It is manufactured from organic Dunlop latex rubber (GOLS certified organic and tested to STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX, and eco-INSTITUT label standards) from FSC certified tree-tapped sources; GOTS certified organic wool; and GOTS certified organic cotton from India. These hybrid mattresses use an internal, zoned, pressure-point system made from upcycled steel. To remove the need for adhesives, they button-tuft the mattresses by hand. These mattresses also meet tough federal flammability standards without using toxic flame retardant chemicals.

Intended for back and stomach sleepers, the Avocado Green Standard model feels firm (firmness rating 7/10). Adding 2 inches of  GOTS certified organic Dunlop latex, the medium-feel (firmness rating 6/10) Pillow-Top version suits side, back, and combo sleepers. For maximum pressure relief (side sleepers love these!) the plush-feel Box-Top mattress (firmness rating 4/10) adds 3 inches of comforting, FSC-certified Talalay latex. Dream on!

If you’re one for indulgence, Avocado has updated the design of their Luxury Organic Mattress—now with plusher-than-plush Pillow-Top and Box-Top editions!

Organic sourcing for organic and vegan living

Avocado is vertically integrated, owning its own ethical wool and latex farms and manufacturing its own springs in Los Angeles. This is how Avocado delivers the Eco Organic Mattress for hundreds of dollars less than competitors’ prices. Avocado’s Eco Organic Mattresses (also available in low-profile Kids and Crib sizes) are all GOTS certified organic and carry the MADE SAFE nontoxic seal.

Remember that children spend even more time than adults directly exposed to their mattress materials. And their neurological, reproductive, and immune systems are still developing. So look for the overall certifications: GREENGUARD Gold, Formaldehyde Free, GOTS Organic, and MADE SAFE® non-toxic. For all the best in organic materials, craftsmanship, an sustainability, parents should check out the Luxury Organic Crib Mattress and the amazingly affordable Organic Crib Mattress.

If  you are looking for a vegan option, Avocado offers that as well. The Avocado Vegan Mattress has a similar hybrid design, but substitutes USDA organic certified cotton batting for wool. They still retain the high standards of all Avocado Green Mattresses, plus there are no animal-based products used in the manufacturing of this mattress.

Test driving Avocado’s All-Latex Organic Mattress

Avocado provided an Avocado Latex Mattress to take for a test sleep, and you can also see this mattress as part of the #EcoRenovate project, Elemental Green’s first branded sustainable renovation. Our reviewer spent 30 nights dreaming. Here are her impressions.

I was excited to trade in my memory foam mattress for a non-toxic alternative. Looking over the specifications for the Avocado Latex Mattress, I figured how could I go wrong with a mattress with this many certifications!

But I had some concerns – How difficult is it to mail order a mattress? Would it have the strong smell that my memory foam mattress had? Would this mattress be comfortable without me being able to choose it from a showroom?

Firstly, the online ordering system through Avocado is very straightforward. You get email acknowledgement of the order and another notification when your mattress is on the way.

I couldn’t wait! The box arrived safely at my doorstep. One thing to note was that the shipping box with the compressed mattress was smaller than I expected, but it was heavy. I had not opted for in-home set up, and it took two of us to get the mattress to the bedroom. Once in place, opening it up could have been accomplished either solo or, as I did it, in tandem. The mattress came very well wrapped and once out of the protective covering it quickly expanded into shape. As a bonus, it is a very attractive mattress which seemed well-made. The stitching was even and there is a nice design in the quilting. It was almost a shame to cover it up.

Now to address off-gassing. I have asthma, and am very sensitive to chemical odors. There was a slight smell when the mattress was opened, however, it was not the petrochemical VOCs that we are accustomed to when dealing with foam or products. It seemed more like plants, and did not trigger any breathing issues. In fact I found it quite pleasant and would have been OK if it persisted. But by the next morning, it was gone.

The mattress has a low profile, but when you are on it, it feels quite thick. Sometimes I have found that it takes some time to adjust to a new mattress or that the 5 minutes I spent trying a bed in the showroom did not translate to long term comfort. In this case, the mattress was very supportive, but not uncomfortably hard; I was sleeping soundly on the first night. Over the course of the next 30 nights, I did not develop any symptoms of a poorly matched mattress: my hips, back, and shoulders did not develop kinks. The built-in motion dampening worked well and turning over in the night didn’t wake my partner. Just in case, I had looked at a pillow topper as an option if the mattress was too firm. In the end I didn’t need it.

Bottom line is, I’m very happy and comfortable on my new mattress. Thanks Avocado!
