Why are nontoxic, organic mattresses so important?

Hello discerning, savvy sleeper and welcome! We need to sleep, but we shouldn’t have to sacrifice our health or our planet to do so comfortably. And thankfully, more and more manufacturers are dreaming up ways to do things better, crafting nontoxic, organic mattresses made with natural materials.

If you’re reading this, you’re probably already aware of the fact that conventional mattresses are made from unsustainable materials and harbor harmful carcinogenic glues, dyes, gels, and/or fire retardants, arsenic and formaldehyde. They can emit toxic VOCs that are bad for your health and need to be replaced far too often—only increasing their eco-impact by requiring more resources and creating more pollution. (If you didn’t know, now you do.)

Before we dive into our top picks, here are a few basic tips for choosing the best nontoxic, natural or organic mattress.

1. Look for independent third-party certifications.

GREENGUARD Gold and OEKO-TEX are the toughest standards for a mattress as a whole. Latex should be eco-INSTITUT® and/or Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) certified. Wool should be OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certified. Cotton should be 100% organic and Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certified. Ideally the product as a whole will be certified MADE SAFE®, which means that it has been evaluated to ensure it is made without harmful chemicals.

Note: Be wary of non-independent certifications like CertiPUR-US, which sounds good but is actually administered by the Alliance for Flexible Polyurethane Foam. Nearly all petroleum-based polyurethane foams will qualify.

2. Look for transparency.

If a company isn’t clearly stating what materials are used in their mattresses, they’re probably trying to hide something. You’ll find that the truly eco-friendly mattress brands shout it from the mountaintops because they’re proud of what they’ve created.

3. Look for the do-gooders.

Making a great product is one thing, but what about the big picture of how the business operates? Do they manufacture in the USA? Do they use recycled/minimal packaging? Do they give back? Support brands that go above and beyond when it comes to the environment and/or social impact.

Oh, and one more thing: consider these facts before racing to find the cheapest organic mattress options: You’ll spend about a third of your life in bed, breathing in its materials. So what happens while you sleep significantly impacts the other two thirds of your life. That’s why your bed is one of the biggest investments you’ll make for your health and well-being

Many of the more expensive brands have 25-year warranties and are truly built to last. Most cheap conventional mattresses only have a lifespan of 5-10 years, costing you more money in the end when you have to replace it more frequently. And, don’t forget that many companies offer financing options, so you can make monthly payments instead of having to pay thousands up front.

Here are some of the best eco-friendly mattresses for every budget.

And, they voluntarily offset 100% of emissions associated with their factory in Los Angeles and with product shipping by supporting carbon offsets via the Bonneville Environmental Foundation. Avocado is a Certified B Corporation, Climate Neutral and Fair Trade® certified, and they have set a goal to become the world’s first zero-waste mattress factory.

Because the brand has embraced change and driven sustainability in materials and manufacturing, plus environmentally and socially responsible supply chains and business practices, Elemental Green is proud to include Avocado Green in our first branded sustainable renovation and virtual showhouse, #EcoRenovate.

In 2015, Avocado co-founders Alex and Jeff D’Andrea were on the hunt for an affordable, nontoxic mattress for their son. A mattress that didn’t use petroleum-based polyurethane foam, toxic fire retardants, dangerous pesticides, or other risky chemicals. What they found was more greenwashing than truly green, and the options that met all their criteria were at a price point they couldn’t afford. So, they set out to make luxury, nontoxic mattresses more affordable.

Avocado green mattresses are handmade in sunny California by people who are paid a fair and living wage. Instead of relying on chemical adhesives, they are needle-tufted by hand in order to anchor the layers of the mattress together. In addition to the high-quality construction, Avocado Green Mattresses are a truly eco-conscious product through and through. The G natural latex is both recyclable and biodegradable and is also naturally mold, mildew, and dust mite resistant. Their packaging uses recycled content and is fully recyclable. They use renewable energy and offset the carbon emissions used to produce and ship their products. And they’re always looking for ways to reduce waste in the manufacturing process.

The Standard Avocado Green Mattress has a firm feel that assures a restful night for back and stomach sleepers. The new medium-firmness Pillow-Top, with an extra 2 inches of GOTS certified organic Dunlop latex,  is great for side, back, and combination sleepers. And the new Box-Top Plush models add 3 inches of FSC certified Talalay latex for side sleepers and others who require more ease on their joints.

The Avocado Latex Mattress provides 3 comfort zones to give you the support you need and inhibit motion transfer. This is their most sustainable product yet, made exclusively with natural, organic materials—latex, cotton, and wool. So green that it is even biodegradable! The certified Organic Luxury Mattress comprises 17 layers of organic latex, alpaca, wool, silk, and hemp, along with more than 3,000 individually pocketed coils made from recycled steel. The new Plush Pillow-Top cradles with micro-coils and extra GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex rubber foam. For the ultimate in comfort (especially for aching shoulders and hips), the Ultra Plush Box-Top contains 5 inches of natural latex foam, both Talalay and Dunlop. Dreamy!

On a budget? Consider Avocado’s Eco Organic Mattress. It offers all of the GOTS certified and MADE SAFE labeled nontoxic goodness, at polyurethane foam mattress prices. Yes, an affordable mattress can be finely crafted and organic certified. If you are looking for a vegan product, Avocado Green Mattress offers a vegan version of their popular mattress, which substitutes cotton for wool. They still provide a great night’s sleep without the use of animal products.

Beyond creating an incredible product, Avocado is a socially responsible company—with a palpable passion for helping make the world a better place. Their operations are carbon negative, have aggressive waste mitigation plans, and as mentioned participate in 1% for the Planet. And, on top of all that (yes, there’s more), reading through their reviews you’ll find countless accolades for their over-the-top customer service. As one satisfied customer shared, “These guys go out of their way when it comes to customer service and the bed is AMAZING! Do yourself a favor and buy one!!!”

One more thing: the Avocado Green Mattress receives excellent rankings from Consumer Reports!

Since this organic mattress is modular, if a section gets damaged, you do not have to replace your entire mattress, just mend or replace the damaged pods!

Be aware that buckwheat hulls provide a firm sleeping experience similar to a Japanese wool or cotton futon. Another unique feature: You can take your organic mattress apart and spread your hulls out on a tarp for a sunshine cleaning while washing your tubes and hanging them out on your line to dry. What other mattress can you clean like this? Important to note is whether you might have a sensitivity to buckwheat.
