So you care about buying a green, environmentally friendly floor?

FSC Certification is a good place to start!  You can be sure that your hardwood floor is from a properly managed forest that future generations will be able to enjoy.

If you really care about buying a product that is green, which incorporates the full characteristics of the tree, and is more efficient in the production, then continue reading!

It starts at the saw mill and understanding how the logs are sawn. Do you know the difference between quarter sawn, rift sawn, plain sawn, & live sawn and what part of the log these boards are cut from?

In order to keep things in layman’s terms & fairly simple to comprehend…

  •  A natural floor is greener than a clear floor. Why? Most trees naturally have knots and character in them.  Clear floors will have these knots chopped out.  Long length, wide plank, clear boards are even harder to come by.
  • Wide Plank Rift Only Sawn is a difficult floor to make. Rift Sawn boards are created from the more narrow parts of the quartered log where the growth rings are at a 45° angle.

Your best options for the greenest floor:

  • A random width, natural or Mill Run, R&Q floor
  • Want even better?  Check out Allegheny Live Sawn

Of course, if the look you want is a beautiful clear wide plank floor get it! Allegheny Mountain Hardwood Flooring is super eco-friendly, and all the “waste” from the production is used.  The chips go to paper mills and the sawdust is used to heat the boiler to run the dry kilns. Whatever you decide, you can feel secure that your Allegheny Mountain Hardwood Flooring is well-manufactured, it comes from a highly renewable resource, grown in a well-managed forest, is 100% made in the USA, and will look beautiful in your home.

FSC Certification Guarantees Sustainable Management of Our Forests

Responsible forestry isn’t something new to Allegheny Mountain Hardwood Flooring. The Hickman family has been managing their own lands in a responsible manner for over seventy years. FSC Certification now allows them to promote responsible forestry to their customers and other for landowners. In 1999 Hickman Lumber was the first in Pennsylvania to be FSC certified through Smartwood. Allegheny Mountain Hardwood Flooring is now proud to offer FSC certified flooring that guarantees the wood your floor is made from comes from a well managed forest.

What is FSC certification?
The Forest Stewardship Council™ (FSC) is an international organization that accredits third-party certifiers such as Rainforest Alliance. Forest management operations that meet the FSC principles and criteria for environmental, economic, and social standards are awarded FSC certification. Operations that purchase and sell FSC-certified products can achieve certification when they meet Chain-of-Custody standards.

What is the Rainforest Alliance’s relationship to FSC?
FSC accredits independent, “third-party” certification bodies or “certifiers” that assess companies and landowners according to FSC policies, principles and criteria. FSC audits its certifiers on an annual basis to ensure that policies are being followed.

Why buy FSC certified flooring?
As more companies and individuals are empowered to make a difference and support responsible forestry, the entire forest ecosystem will benefit. By buying certified lumber/flooring now you are helping to ensure future generations the opportunity to enjoy our forests for their own intrinsic beauty and values.
